Why IIT-B can't crack food poisoning case?

Three months after the food poisoning incident, the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT-B) has still not figured out why more than 600 students had fallen ill after dinner at the hostel mess.

Despite the fact-finding committee probing into the matter for two months, the institute, which takes pride in scientific research has been unable to figure out how klebsiella, the bacteria that was found in the stool samples of the affected students, was present in the food.

"Around 80% of gastrointestinal diseases are caused by bad handling of food and unhygienic methods. Not all food contamination is caused by the raw material. In fact, on most occasions, food gets contaminated when it is not handled hygienically,"said Ashwin Bhadri, head business relations, Equinox Lab, a professional expert agency in hygiene auditing.
"If the food handler is suffering from an illness, he or she can pass the contamination to the food. Hence, maintaining a clean kitchen and hygiene of the workers is important."

Questions are now being raised if the institute went about finding answers in a scientific manner or is it simply brushing the issue under the carpet.

In a bid to quell reports in the media, IIT-B went to the extent of issuing a gag order on students and even conducted an opinion poll last month to see if a blanket ban on media should be implemented.

The key questions that the institute doesn't have answers to are how the fact-finding committee would probe into the incident when it was formed as late as the last week of October — almost a month later. Obviously, it did not have food samples to check.

The institute was quick to rule out water contamination believing a report submitted by the purifier manufacturer, and the food handlers were not subjected to medical examinations immediately to check if they were had any infections.
The committee reportedly also overlooked other sources of infection such as seepage in the walls of the hostel mess that could lead to mold.

Bhadri said the panel should have checked the possibility of contamination by air as the walls of the hostel mess were extremely moist.

While professor Urjit Yagnik, dean of student affairs at IIT-B, admitted no medical checks were conducted on the food handlers, he gave an assurance it has been made mandatory in the new contract.

"Routine medical check-ups and regular training for the canteen workers to maintain basic hygiene will be part of the canteen contract. All canteen staff has been asked to use sanitizer for washing with immediate effect."
Yagnik admitted that the suspect food samples were not made available to the panel.

"We have not been able to take samples of the food and water consumed by students on September 25, because they started showing symptoms and reporting to the campus hospital at different points. Some even complained of stomach ache a day later. The samples could be taken only of the items that were available after students started complaining of illness," he said.

He, however, denied claims that the water at the campus was being tested by a purifier manufacturer. "Students do not have complete information. The water was properly tested by experts at the IIT-B labs. But, it would not be correct to completely rule out water as a cause of contamination as the director-appointed committee's report is yet inconclusive."

In one of the issues of Insight, an official IIT-B students' magazine, Prasoon Thapliyal, general secretary of hostel number 13 (one of the messes affected by food poisoning), mentioned how the purifier manufacturer staff had conducted tests. He also lamented the poor construction of the kitchen and uncontrolled seepage in the walls.

RE/MAX Agents Share Ten Ways to Get the Best of Winter When Selling Your Home

If your home will be for sale this winter, it is important to master certain seasonal issues that are less significant or even non-existent at other times of the year. Here are 10 bits of sage advice from RE/MAX agents that can help put a “Sold” sticker on that yard sign.

Let Those Lights Shine: The best way to combat winter’s short and frequently cloudy days is to turn on your house lights. For a showing, every single light in the house must be on, even in the closets and utility/mechanical rooms, according to Marlene Granacki of RE/MAX Exclusive Properties, Chicago.

“Make sure all the bulbs are working, and stock up on all the right bulbs for lamps and fixtures so burned out bulbs can be replaced immediately,” she advises. “Also, it’s a great idea to keep the lights on in the front of the house even if no showings are scheduled. People are always driving past the house, and keeping it lighted makes it look happy and welcoming.”

Provide Convenient Parking: It’s vital that buyers have a convenient place to park. They won’t want to walk very far in cold weather or be forced to climb over a snow bank to exit their vehicle. Because parking is often more restricted around condominiums, sellers should make sure their agent can pass along parking details to buyers.

Make It Easy to Enter: Winter showings can get off to an awkward start if prospective buyers arrive with snow or salt on their shoes.

“Make it easy for buyers to deal with their shoes when they arrive,” recommends Barbara Hibnick of RE/MAX Showcase, Long Grove, Ill. “Put a festive area rug at the front door for a great first impression and so visitors can wipe their feet. Have slippers or disposable booties available, along with a bench or chair, if there is room for one, where a visitor can sit and easily remove or put on their boots.”

Keep Odors Under Control: Any home tends to be stuffy in winter when windows are opened rarely. That can allow odors to build up, which can be a turn-off to buyers.

“Pet odors can be especially worrisome in winter,” says Mike Mondello of RE/MAX Synergy in Orland Park, Ill. “Use a room fragrance if needed, but nothing too strong, and I recommend that in winter sellers clean more often.” For example, change the cat litter daily, rather than every third or fourth day, or even consider using an air purifier.

If pets are in the house, consider setting the thermostat control so that the furnace fan runs constantly during the day to keep air moving through the house and dissipate odors. Also try to avoid strong cooking odors, especially if a showing is scheduled that day.

Cultivate a Festive Look: Appropriate decorations for Thanksgiving, Christmas and even St. Valentine’s Day help give a home a cheerful look during the winter months.

“I really believe that holiday decorations can help homes sell, but don’t go to excess,” suggests Starr Zook of RE/MAX On Track in Aledo, Ill. “Keeping small, decorative white lights on trees and bushes pretty much through the winter season is fine, but other decorations should be taken down quickly once the holiday passes.”

Don’t Ignore the Outdoors: Make a good first impression on buyers with a neatly maintained yard. Walks and steps should be kept clear, especially of snow and ice.

Don’t Roast Buyers: We all tend to prefer a specific temperature for our homes during the winter, but don’t blast buyers with hot air. Keep the temperature at a comfortable 65 degrees for all showings. Remember, buyers are likely to be wearing their coats even as they walk through the house.

Keep Seasonal Clothing under Control: “One major challenge of selling a home during the winter months is the overabundance of cold weather gear that must be stored,” says Mike Mondello. “A buyer doesn’t want to find the mudroom filled with boots or the hall closet overflowing with heavy coats. Shift some winter coats to another closet and put anything not needed in the closet into storage.”

Encourage Day Time Showings: A home shows to its best advantage during daylight hours, which are relatively scarce in winter.

“Encourage your agent to show your home before 3 p.m. and have it ready to show by 9 a.m. if you want the best results,” Granacki recommends.

Despite the special challenges of marketing a home during winter, there also are benefits, notes Laura Ortoleva, a spokesperson for the RE/MAX Northern Illinois real estate network.

“Buyers out looking at homes in December or January are, as a group, quite serious about buying. Therefore, sellers tend to benefit because each showing is more productive, and fewer showings are needed to sell the property,” she said.

Sharp tweaks China strategy, will sell appliances

Japan's home appliance giant Sharp Corporation recently announced the restructuring of its business in China. While maintaining its focus on mobile phones and LCD televisions, the company will unveil a series of eco-friendly white goods in China, including refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners and air purifiers.

The home appliance maker disclosed that Sharp (China) Investment Company began operations in Beijing last month to replace its previous China head office in Shanghai. The eco-friendly white goods to be sold in China, including four models of refrigerators as well as two models of washing machines, air conditioners and air purifiers, are all from Sharp's newly established healthy environment department.

Sharp's business in the Chinese mainland used to be homogenous, and about 70 percent of its income came from LCD TVs, followed by mobile phones and electronic components. The contribution from white home appliances, such as refrigerators, washing machines and air conditioners was relatively low.

Given the slow pace of growth in the LCD TV market, home appliance producers are all making efforts to diversify its operations to avert market risks. For foreign brands like Sharp, it means breaking into the home appliances that used to be only available at home markets to China. Furthermore, after establishing the information and communications department, Sharp also plans to introduce products including e-book readers, calculators and electronic dictionaries into the Chinese market.

Nobuyuki Kanno, Sharp's CEO of the greater China region, said that the proportion of the corporation's sales revenue from the greater China region to the total sales revenue of all the other non-Japan regions is increasing year by year and currently has exceeded that of the U.S. market. The greater China region has turned into the largest overseas market of the corporation.

Can Having Plants in Your Office Help to Increase Your Happiness Level and Mood at Work?

I have worked in some really depressing looking environments down here in Alabama and I know how it feels to get up in the morning in an upbeat mood only to get in the car, start the engine, put it in reverse and then put it in drive and head down the road to that work environment with the equivalent looking atmosphere as if you were going to some dark cave in the mountains.

There are a ton of work environments out there where the office or maybe even your office is like walking into a shoe box. It has no windows and the only thing in your office is maybe an outdated desk with broken drawers that fall out of it every time you go to open them or your companies Mission Statement that has been hanging on your wall since the Taj Mah Hal was built.

I once worked in an environment here in Alabama where the company had been around since the early 1930s and when I went into their warehouse to do cycle counts I saw boxes on the shelves that must have been received the day the company opened because the boxes were so rotten that the paper and cardboard that makes up the box had rotted so bad the box sitting on the shelf that had the part in it was reduced to paper dust and the part had fallen out of the box, Unbelievable!

Yes, the atmosphere of your work environment does play a part on your mood and motivation while at work. I once heard we spend more time at work then we do with our families and most of the time nowadays if you are one of the lucky ones to even have a job in this economy you are doing the job of three or four people and are ending up burning the midnight oil sitting at your desk or work space.

This is now just a fact of life to have to work many long hours but the least your company or even you can take your depressing looking work environment and turn into one of the seventh wonders of the world by adding plants to your office.

According to the Society for Horticulture Science (ASHS) people who spend many long hours at work and work in an office with no windows, natural light form sunshine or even that don`t have plants sitting around their office have an increased dissatisfaction for their job and have more stress and reported depression.

This is a problem that is very fixable by adding live plants and offices with windows and sunshine that flows in like spreading soft frosting on a cake. A study by Dr. Tina Marie Waliczek Cade, Associate Professor of Horticulture in the Department of Agriculture at Texas State University, and colleagues put together an Internet based study to see if offices with windows and views of green spaces as well as offices containing live plants increased productivity and employee happiness on the job.

The employees that took the Internet based survey that worked in offices that had live plants and windows reported a dramatic increase in job satisfaction and happiness compared to the ones that worked in those dreaded looking work environments with no plants or windows.

Even NASA has been involved in studying plants and how plants have an effect on air quality found through research that your everyday houseplants work as natural air purifiers. The original study on this was aimed by NASA at ways to purify the air for extended stays in orbiting space stations found that the same study has important implications for those on Earth, too.

For anyone that is into science or horticulture knows that plants convert carbon dioxide into oxygen through photosynthesis. This was something I learned when I was still playing with Lincoln Logs in Kindergarten. Since then, NASA has found that plants also do a lot more for the quality of the air you and I breathe by also removing harmful elements such as trichloroethylene, benzene, and formaldehyde from the air.

So since most office buildings are constructed with synthetic building materials and most of those offices and office buildings are tightly sealed and built you have the harmful elements floating around the air in them like an orchard of dandelions filling the air on a warm and spring like breezy day and with that you have what is known as the Sick Building Syndrome.

So, don`t just settle for those work spaces and offices that make you want to drink strong coffee all day to keep your mood upbeat, liven up that dreary work space and office by going to your local Wal-Mart and buy those exotic looking plants that make you dream of sitting on a beach drinking those sipping Martinis with the funny looking umbrella that stick out of them like a small sign post.

When loud noises cause your dog to panic

Not all dogs panic when they hear loud noises and there does not seem to be any particular breed predilection for this behavior. Two separate and distinct areas of the brain are responsible for sensing then responding to load noises. Cells that sense loud noises respond by increasing their electrical activity sending strong signals to cells in the response area of the brain. Those cells respond by conveying the information; LOUD, SCARY, DO SOMETHING!

When your pet detects a loud noise, remember their hearing is significantly more acute than that of humans. She/he/it cannot tune out the sound like hearing a ceiling fan, the TV or other common background noises.

The response cells process the received increase in electrical activity and send out signals that require the dog to do something. What the dog does in response to the loud noise input varies with the animal and can range from shear panic and panic behavior to a yawn and going back to sleep. What is confusing is that many dogs seem to develop the panic response in mid-life, perhaps having experienced something painful or uncomfortable associated with a loud noise. Most puppies and young dogs do not exhibit much of a response to loud noises, but there are always exceptions.
The pressing question is, if you have a dog that panics at loud sounds, what can I do about it?

When you go away, put your dog inside in a safe place you have created for him/her. Many dogs will choose a room or area where they are most comfortable and where they go when unsupervised. Make certain they have free access to this area when you are gone. Encourage them to use a room with few outside windows and use blackout curtains on any windows in the room. This will dampen the noise level. Turn on an appliance that creates background noise, an air purifier, a fan, a TV, a radio tuned to classical or soothing music. This is not the time for hard rock.

Make certain the dog has a comfortable bed — hardwood floors and hard walls transmit loud sounds. I hesitate to tell you this, but it is a sign of the times. You can purchase “Dog Appeasing Pheromone (DAP).” I saw it in a pet store as a plug-in that claims to be a species-specific calming scent. Can you see my eyes rolling back into my head?

If you are with your dog during Fourth of July firecracker season or a thunderstorm, try to establish a connection between the dog hearing a loud sound and something nice. Try to calm him with praise, feed him a special treat. Scared dogs will not eat and a dog eating something especially desired will not be scared.
If none of this works, ask your veterinarian to recommend a professional trainer or animal behaviorist who specializes in behavior modification.

As a very last resort, your vet can prescribe a tranquilizer, but these work best if given before the loud stimulus so in anticipation of fireworks. Your vet may or may not approve of this use of drugs. I am hesitant in all but very severe cases where the dog is liable to hurt itself or others.

AMWAY pays respect to martyrs with blood donation camp

The Amway Opportunity Foundation, AOF today in collaboration with the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, paid tribute to the martyrs of the Anglo Manipur War of 1891 and organized a blood donation camp at the RIMS blood bank.

The donation camp was organized with the objective to save lives with safe transfusion of blood. The aim behind the blood donation is also to make people aware of the umpteen health benefits of blood donation.

At a formal function, Prof A. Meina Singh, Head of the Department, Department of Immunohaematology & Blood Transfusion, Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS Hospital, Imphal) inaugurated the Blood Donation Camp today at the premise of Regional Institute of Medical Sciences. The camp witnessed around 220 donors comprising of Amway Distributors and Amway employees in Imphal.

Speaking to mediapersons on the sideline of the camp, Sarbani Bhattacharya said that Amway Opportunity Foundation organized this blood donation camp highlighting health benefits of blood donation. While the most obvious health benefit of donating blood is the wonderful feeling derived from giving something vital to someone who needs it, the benefits of donating blood may extend far beyond this to having a positive impact on the donor’s health. Blood donation removes some of the excess iron which can cause free radical formation in the body. In fact, studies have shown that men who donate blood on a regular basis have a lower risk of heart disease. Donating blood also helps donors to burn calories and to enhance production of new red blood cells.

“Donating blood is one of the most noble and significant contribution that a person can make to the society. Every year many people die during surgery only because of not getting enough supply of blood in time. By donating blood we indirectly save many lives” said William S Pinckney, Chairman – Amway Opportunity Foundation.

Amway Opportunity Foundation and Amway Distributors have held in excess 400 blood donation camps over the past four years. Over 40,000 units of blood have been donated at these blood donation camps. The largest ever Blood Donation Camp was held in Orissa with 830 donors.

In Manipur, Amway Opportunity Foundation (AOF) has adopted an orphanage MEETEI PHURUP under Project Sunrise and undertaken developmental activities in education, health and access to safe drinking water. AOF had rolled out Project Sunrise in Imphal in 2009 and announced its partnership with Meetei Phurup in Imphal. To mark the beginning, AOF had donated computers, installed water purifiers and also provided infrastructural support.

“Project Sunrise is supported by Amway’s Global CSR initiative – One by One, and will extend to 64 orphanages across the country. This Project is primarily supported by Amway’s 50th year anniversary funds, where AOF will engage partnerships with NGOs to support on-going education, healthcare (with focus on access to safe drinking water) and nutrition,” said Diptarag Bhattacharjee, Vice President – East, Amway, also a volunteer of AOF. Interestingly, Amway considers all its employees and distributors, as AOF volunteers.
